The Famous Restaurant Sek Yuen Which was Started By 3 Brothers Who Serves A Legendary Roast Duck For 72 Years
If you come across Jalan Pudu, you wouldn’t be able to miss out on this oldest surviving building restaurant which is known as Sek Yuen. This restaurant was founded in 1948 by 3 brothers, Phang Chew Kan, Phang Meng Yun, and Phang Shue Tang where this restaurant has succeeded by more than 80 descendants from the same family.
They are famous for their traditional Cantonese dishes such as Cold Jelly Chicken, Butterflied Roast Duck, and more. The Sek Yuen story started in the 1940s during World War 2 time with the founding brothers started to sell wanton mee from humble pushcarts in a hawker center as then they started to build simple structures with some shade to expand their menu, plus they also started to serve cheap dim sum in the morning session as early riser usually don’t have much money during the post-war time such as traders, newspaper vendors, and rubber tappers.
In 1953, they have started to build their first restaurant which is the same building as standing until today and before the digital age, you can see one of the owners is still using an abacus to manage the cash register and he can calculate your bill quicker than you use a calculator. Here you can find famous dishes such as Cold Jelly Chicken with Jelly Fish, Handmade Crab Balls, Stir-Fried Crab Egg wrapped in lettuce, and the Eight Treasure Braised Duck, while some of these special dish required an earlier booking in 2 days in advance and mostly the dishes here is being cooked using wood-fire stove until today!~
So if you haven’t tried them out, you should give it a try as it holds a heritages taste of the traditional Cantonese cooking dish which is still delicious and maintained all taste until today!
