On March 25, the sushi chain, Sushi Jiro has refuted the claims of a woman who accused them for secretly serving dishes with pork content. Sushi Jiro has stated on their Facebook that the accusation is fake information and they are currently investigating the matter.
The rumour started from a woman known as Emma Azri which she stated that she and her family were queuing up for a table at Sushi Jiro outlet when a restaurant’s female employee approached her and whispered to her that they serve pork on the menu. And she also wrong about wearing a niqah, a Muslim with face covered for woman might have compelled the female employee to discourage her from eating there and she has deleted her statement off social media but screenshot of her words have been circulating online.
Facebook’s users have since been debating the difference between the terms “pork-free” and “halal” underneath Sushi Jiro’s statement. While Sushi Jiro promotes itself as a pork-free restaurant, it does not have halal certification from the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) as they serve alcohol.
