Sony Closing Audio Product Plant in Malaysia By 2022
Tokyo – Sony will soon consolidate their 2 factories in Malaysia by the end of September 2022 where the Japanese electronics entertainment conglomerate will close their audio product factory located in Penang and transfer their manufacturing functions to a base at Kuala Lumpur and about 3,600 workers at the Penang factory will be affected and most likely to be laid off while some will be transferred to other factories.
Sony Penang plant is the main production site for audio products like headphones and home audio equipment which the company plans to stop all operations by the end of September 2021 and close the facility by end of March 2022. Both these plants have been in operation since 1988 and the current move comes amid Sony’s efforts to review their production of electronic devices such as audio equipment and the company also plans to shut down their TV and Audio factory in Brazil next year which is also has been operating since 1984.
Meanwhile, Sony is expecting their performance on a 23% decrease in operating profit for the year ending March 2021 to 67 billion yen (Rm2.6 billion) due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
