The Penang State Government has decided to upgrade the “No Plastic Bag Campaign” from January 1, 2021. Every Thursday to Sunday, if people ask for plastic bags after consumption in stores, they need to pay RM1 to buy plastic bags.

The Chairman of the Penang State Environment and Welfare Commission, Pang Man Poh, recently announced that the Penang State Government will start from January 1, 2021, to enforce a no-plastic bag day from Monday to Wednesday, and the purchase of plastic bags on other days (Thursday to Sunday) It will also increase from 20 sen to RM1 ringgit.

Plastic bag increased from 20 cents to RM1

At present, if people want to obtain plastic bags to store goods after buying things in stores, they need to pay 20 cents to buy plastic bags. However, starting from January 1, 2021, it will be increased to RM1 ringgit.

In addition, it is currently limited to the “No Plastic Bag Day” implemented on Monday, and it will be extended to a total of 3 days on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Therefore, even if people want to pay for plastic bags during these three days, businesses are not allowed to provide plastic bags.

Monday to Wednesday: On days
without plastic bags, businesses are not allowed to provide plastic bags

Thursday to Sunday:
If people want to buy plastic bags, the charge will be RM1
