The Thailand government has confirmed that the Phuket island will be officially reopen for foreign visitor starting from July 1, which is the first destination to reopen since the Covid-19 pandemic started last year. The Centre Economic Situation Administration, chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-Cha on Friday has approved the proposal by Phuket’s private sector and business groups to inoculate the 70% of the island’s residents on the reopening with vaccinated tourist.

The minister said that visitor to the island will be required to received two doses of the complete vaccine in their home country before they are allowed to enter into Phuket under the Tourism Sandbox.
The government plan t test the reopening in Phuket before expanding it to other key tourist hotspot such as Koh Samui and other. Phuket’s residents will also prioritised in the vaccine rollout with more than 930,000 doses expected to be administered before the reopening.
With this early reopening, it could add more than 30 billion bath to the Thailand’s economy and the Disease Control Department director-general Opas Karnkawinpong said on Friday the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration had agreed to reduce the quarantine period from 14 to 10 days, for both Thais and foreigners, from April 1. However, this does not apply to visitor from some African countries due to the South Africa variant.
