While in marathon runner or military personnel, doctors are reporting more cases of exertional rhabdomyolysis cause by spin classes around the world.
Rhabdomyolysis is a life-threatening condition which cause by damaged muscle fibre breaking down too fast and releasing the contents into bloodstream which can lead to acute kidney failure where the victim will suffer muscle pain, muscle weakness, and dark brown urine caused by proteins from broken muscle entering the urine.
Atrina Lau, 28 years old who ended up in hospital facing possible acute kidney failure after a spin class as she experiences after attending her spin class on 7 March. She said that right after her classes, she finds that her leg were limp and she couldn’t walk properly then the next three days, walking was very painful as she can’t squat or sit and she still thinks that it was just some typical muscle soreness because she had not exercised for a long time.
However, on the next few days she started to notice that her urine turning brown and her muscle pain was becoming more unbearable which she realised that it was more than what she has think of. She immediately went to a clinic to get referred to a government hospital emergency department and in 2am morning, the doctor told her she had rhabdomyolysis. Where her muscle breakdown was so severe that her creatinine kinase levels were over 73,000 units per litre (U/L), as for normal person it is around 200 U/L only.
She spends four day in the hospital undergoing intravenous hydration therapy and she needs to drink a lot of water during the period and she reminded everyone that always stay hydrate after exercising and beginner and newcomers should always know their own limits, and not over pushing themselves.
