M’sian Artist Erica Eng Win Best Webcomic On Famous Comic Book Awards
On 27 July, a Johor-born animator Erica Eng has received the Eisner Award for her webcomic title under Fried Rice, this 21-year-old is the youngest and placed number 4th Malaysia ever to be nominated for this award.
She is competing against those famous Dreamworks Animation visual developer Jason Brubaker, Spanish cartoonist Javi de Castro, as well as US-based artists Matt Huynh, Erik Lundy, and Meredith Moriarty, but ultimately came out on top. This Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards are held at the annual San Diego Comic Convention and the Eisner Awards were held virtually for the first time in 32 years due to the current pandemic.
Her stories of Fried Rice were set against the bustling backdrop of Kuala Lumpur in 2015 where the humble story of Min an aspiring young artist in hope of studying in New York, US. Where her stories remind her of the frustration she felt being an artist in Batu Pahat upon finishing her secondary school and how she as a teenager wanted to pursue art in a small town.
She is currently pursuing a degree in 3D animation via remote learning with the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California. In her story, which actually holds an honest portrait of the ordinary people life that has earned her this award where Eng’s favorite comfort food is widely popular for the way that Malaysian will be eating a packet of nasi lemak or fried rice as the common people leaving here in this country, which were drawn out with her dreamy watercolor liked the art style.
