In Kuala Lumpur, some street vendors have been selling annually on the Ramadan bazaar in Kelana Jaya, Selangor where the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 has banned all bazaar in the country earlier. However, bazaars have been allowed to operate in most parts of the country this year. Where a lot of vendors are grateful for this news. However, photos of huge crowds, with people standing in close proximity to one another have gone viral on social media and this has sparked fears that the decision to allow bazaars could lead to another spike in the Covid-19 case increasing.

The daily number of infections in Malaysia recently has risen back to more than 2,000 cases daily and on Thursday, April 22 Malaysia recorded 2,875  new cases and 7 deaths. Currently, in all bazaar visitors were seen queuing to get in as there was a quota limiting the number of people who could be there at any one time and each visitor had to scan a QR code via the Mysejahtera application, measure temperate and obtaining a number tag. Although there were signs and marking tape directing the flow of human traffic some people are still standing close to one another and not really adhering to social distancing especially when queuing at the more popular stall.

A vendor stall in Kalana Jaya Bazaar, Siti Aisyah Yap said that this year her business has fallen 30 percent but she thinks she would not be survived another year of bazaar earlier but she said she was thankful that they are here. While bazaars with health protocols are not followed, the federal government has warned that they will be asked to close. Last week only, Federal Territories Minister Annuar Musa has said in a statement that any of the 66 bazaars in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Labuan will be shut if a Covid-19 outbreak happens due to lack of compliance to SOP. While the states of Kelantan and Sabah have banned Ramadan Bazaar this year due to rising covid-19 cases.
