Recently, a message saying that the police will be issuing summons to drivers who wear sunglasses while driving has gone viral on messaging app WhatsApp.
The viral message alleged that any driver — be it a car, a lorry or a bus — caught wearing sunglasses while behind the wheel will be issued with a RM500 compound.
The message also contained an audio clip of the first-hand encounter from a driver who received the compound for the alleged offence.
So, can we or can we not wear sunglasses while driving? Is it actually an offence?
Well, the answer is no, it’s not an offence to wear shades while you’re behind the wheel.
With our Malaysian weather, where the sun is always scorching our eyes and we will have to use sunglasses to protect our eyes. However, recently there is news regarding people getting fined for wearing sunglasses during driving time. Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department deputy director Datuk Mohd Nadzri Hussain told Bernama that the allegation is false and unfounded. The fake news was due to someone spreading fake rumours.
