Dead Whale Shark With One of its Fin Missing Found Floating in the Waters off Pulau Pangkor

The Rantau Abang Fisheries Research Institute (FRI) Marine Mammal Branch Cheif Mohd Tamimi Ali Ahmad has mentioend that fishermen found a dead 5.7 m long shark floating at the sea around 3 pm on Friday, 22 January where the body of the Rhincodon Typus were found in a mangrove area which made it difficult for them to look out for it. And the shark’s carcass were found near the Damar Laut Jetty at 6.30 pm the next day.

According to Mohd Tamimi, the carcass where belongs to a five-year-old male whale shark which has been dead for four days before it was found, which the carcass was towed to the Kampung Acheh Fisheries Jetty for a post mortem which found that its right pectoral fin had been cut off. While the post mortem also revealed the creature’s stomach has excessively bloated with 37.9 liters of water and contain garbage including plastics and branches.
The FRI cheif are still investigating the whale shark’s cause of death and not confirming that it might be an act by some pachers out there, as irresponsible parties often kill sharks for their fins as a bowl of shark fin soupd could cost anything from Rm100 to RM1,000. And shark are normally found at south of Pulau Pangkor where this area is rich in anchovies and prawns.
