Celcom Will Upgrade 4,700 Sites to Latest 4G Tech by Feb 2021 with 1,000 Site in East M’sia
With the recent news of viral cases where we can hear there is a lot of students studying at home and their hometown just seems to lack internet coverage or having a very weak signal. Now Celcom has announced that they will expedite their network improvement exercise to support the increasing demand for mobile data where currently they are accelerating their investment of RM256 million to upgrade this network capacity and deploy more 4G base throughout Malaysia.
Previously, Celcom has recorded a 40% increase in data traffic in Q3 2020 compared to Q4 in 2019 which is driven by the cause of the Covid-19 pandemic where more consumers are digitally engaged from their homes during the MCO order as a lot of Malaysian have to work from home.
Celcom with this upgrade of 4,700 network sites nationwide where 49% is located in urban areas and 51% will be in rural areas by February 2021. This site will also be upgraded and optimized to the latest 4G equipment and there will be almost 1,000 4G network sites in Sabah and Sarawak shall be upgraded and optimized too.
As a result, the network will allow more consumers to enjoy HD video streaming and improved voice quality via Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE). Celcom also emphasized that Celcom is aligned with the government’s JENDELA plan to expand 4G coverage to every corner of the country by deploying the latest 4G technologies including 4T4R MIMO, carrier aggregation, 256QAM, and more. Celcom currently boasts having the widest network with over 11,500 sites nationwide and having more than 13 million users.
