Bicycle Might be Required To Have License Plate To Avoid Accident Involving Bicycle On Roads
In order to ensure the safety of cyclists from being exposed to road accidents, every bicycle in the country must be registered, licensed, and placed with the same registration plate number as a motor vehicle. These strict rules seem stale and absurd, however, they are important in order to protect the safety of road users. In this regard, the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) is studying the needs.
However, The Ministry of Transport (MOT) said there was no plan on its part to implement the registration and licensing of every bicycle in the country and put the license plate number like a motor vehicle. Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong said the matter was never discussed at the ministry level, in fact, the proposal was never raised with him.
“Many more factors need to be studied and considered by the MOT to ensure the safety of road users, including pedestrians.
“So far, any comment made by Miros (Malaysian Road Safety Research Institute) as reported by the media today is not a policy until through various processes and then get the minister’s approval,” he said in a statement today.
“This safety-related program will also be discussed and updated during the Road Safety Council meeting which will be held this month,” he said.
He also advised all riders or cycling enthusiasts to prioritize safety and comply with road rules such as regulations under the Road Transport Act 1987
