Looking for a fun weekend activity in Penang that will not put a dent in your wallet? If you enjoy watching movies, spending quality time with your loved ones and discovering interesting places, there is a special event worth checking out this weekend. The Waterfront Shoppes at The Light City, Penang, is bringing movie entertainment outdoors with its Movie Under The Stars event, offering visitors a chance to enjoy FREE movie screenings under the night sky, together with complimentary popcorn!

Taking place over three days, from 30 October to 1 November 2026, this outdoor cinema experience is a lovely opportunity for families, couples and groups of friends to enjoy something different without having to spend money on cinema tickets. Instead of sitting inside a conventional cinema, visitors can settle into an open-air setting, enjoy the evening breeze and watch their favourite movies in a waterfront environment.

Even better, admission is FREE, making this an attractive weekend entertainment option for anyone looking to enjoy a little outing while keeping their spending under control.

Enjoy Movie Under The Stars at The Waterfront Shoppes Penang

There is something special about watching a movie outdoors. Rather than being surrounded by four cinema walls, visitors get to enjoy the open-air atmosphere while spending time with the people who matter most.

That is exactly what The Waterfront Shoppes is offering with its Movie Under The Stars event. Located at Rodeo Drive, the shopping destination will host three days of outdoor movie entertainment, giving Penang residents and visitors another reason to explore this waterfront destination.

The screenings are scheduled to begin from 7.30pm onwards, making it a suitable evening activity after work, dinner or a day spent exploring Penang.

The best part is that visitors do not need to purchase expensive movie tickets to participate. They can simply head over, enjoy the outdoor cinema experience and take advantage of the complimentary popcorn offer while stocks last and subject to availability.

For families with children, this could be a particularly enjoyable evening. Children can experience the excitement of watching a movie outdoors, while parents get to enjoy a relaxing night without having to worry about paying for everyone’s cinema admission.

Three Featured Movies to Look Forward To

One of the interesting things about this event is its selection of featured movies. According to the official event announcement, visitors can look forward to three different films, offering a mixture of family entertainment, heartwarming storytelling and action-packed excitement.

Here are the featured movies:

1. Finding Nemo

Families looking for an entertaining movie to enjoy with their children will appreciate Finding Nemo. This much-loved animated adventure follows Marlin, a protective clownfish who travels across the ocean in search of his missing son, Nemo.

Along the way, he encounters unforgettable characters and discovers the importance of courage, friendship and believing in himself. It is a wonderful choice for families who enjoy animated films with meaningful messages and plenty of entertaining moments.

2. Dolphin Tale

For those who prefer an inspiring and heartwarming story, Dolphin Tale offers something a little different. Based on true events, the film follows the story of a dolphin named Winter and the people who come together to help her recover after a serious injury.

It is a touching movie about kindness, determination, friendship and never giving up, making it a suitable choice for viewers of different ages.

3. The Meg

If you prefer something more thrilling, The Meg brings a completely different movie experience. Featuring an enormous prehistoric shark and an underwater adventure filled with suspense, the film is an entertaining option for viewers who enjoy action and adventure.

With three different titles available, the movie selection offers something for different preferences, whether visitors are planning a family outing or simply looking for an entertaining evening.

Do check with the organiser or venue for the individual screening schedule, as the official event information does not specify which movie will be shown on each date.

FREE Admission and Complimentary Popcorn

When it comes to finding affordable entertainment, FREE activities are always worth considering, especially when they offer something enjoyable for the entire family.

For this event, visitors can enjoy FREE admission to the outdoor movie screenings. This means families do not have to spend money on individual cinema tickets just to enjoy a movie together.

The complimentary popcorn makes the experience even better. After all, what is a movie night without something to munch on while watching the screen?

However, visitors should remember that the popcorn offer is available while stocks last and is subject to availability. It is therefore a good idea to arrive earlier rather than turning up at the last minute and potentially missing out.

Another advantage is that visitors can enjoy the waterfront surroundings before the screening begins. Rather than making a special trip just to watch a movie, they can turn the evening into a more complete outing.

Make It a Weekend Family Outing

Since Movie Under The Stars is taking place at The Waterfront Shoppes, visitors can make the most of their trip by exploring the shopping destination before heading to the outdoor cinema.

Arriving early gives visitors time to walk around, discover the available retail outlets and explore the dining options. Whether it is enjoying dinner with the family, catching up with friends over a meal or simply taking a leisurely stroll, there are plenty of ways to make the evening more enjoyable.

For parents, this is a nice opportunity to plan a simple family evening without spending too much. Instead of paying for a full cinema experience, the family can enjoy the surroundings, have dinner together and finish the evening with a movie under the stars.

Couples can also consider this event as a casual date-night idea. Sometimes, an enjoyable evening does not need to involve expensive restaurants or entertainment packages. A relaxed waterfront atmosphere, complimentary popcorn and a movie can be more than enough for a memorable night out.

Friends looking for something different to do over the weekend can also make plans to attend together. It is a good alternative to the usual shopping, café-hopping or indoor entertainment activities.

Why Should You Visit This FREE Outdoor Cinema Event?

There are several reasons why Movie Under The Stars deserves a place on your weekend itinerary.

First, the FREE admission makes it an excellent option for anyone trying to save money. Cinema outings can become expensive, particularly for larger families. Having the opportunity to enjoy movie entertainment without paying for tickets is certainly a welcome change.

Second, the waterfront setting offers a different atmosphere from a traditional cinema. Visitors can enjoy the open-air environment and evening breeze while spending quality time with their loved ones.

Third, the selection of featured films caters to different audiences. From the family-friendly adventure of Finding Nemo to the inspiring story of Dolphin Tale and the action-packed entertainment of The Meg, there are different movie experiences to look forward to.

Finally, the event gives visitors another reason to discover The Waterfront Shoppes at The Light City. Those who have not explored this shopping destination can take the opportunity to visit, check out its facilities and enjoy the surrounding area.

With only three days available, this is also a limited-time event that visitors should not leave until the last minute.

Plan Your Visit Before Heading Over

If you are planning to attend, consider arriving earlier to explore The Waterfront Shoppes and enjoy dinner before the screening starts.

The event is scheduled to begin from 7.30pm onwards, with the outdoor cinema taking place at Rodeo Drive. Visitors should also check the organiser’s latest announcements for updates regarding the movie screening schedule, seating arrangements and any event-day requirements.

As this is an outdoor event, weather conditions may affect the screenings. It is advisable to check the official event page before travelling, particularly if there is rain or an unfavourable weather forecast.
