Parents raising children with long-term health conditions often face challenges that are not always visible to others. While much attention is given to helping children manage chronic illnesses, the emotional wellbeing of parents is sometimes overlooked. That is why a new research initiative by Monash University Malaysia deserves attention, especially for families caring for children experiencing chronic pain.
Starting from 3 August 2026 onwards, eligible parents in Malaysia are invited to participate in an important online research study that aims to better understand how caring for a child living with chronic pain affects family life. The study is being shared through the National Cancer Society Malaysia and offers an opportunity for parents to contribute to meaningful research while also standing a chance to receive a RM50 prize.
Unlike many promotional campaigns that focus on shopping or discounts, this opportunity allows participants to support medical and psychological research that may benefit countless Malaysian families in the future. At the same time, eligible participants will be entered into a lucky draw where 24 winners will each receive RM50, making it an added incentive for taking part.
The research is led by researchers from Monash University Malaysia, who are interested in learning more about the experiences of parents caring for children aged between 6 and 16 years old who have been living with chronic pain for longer than three months.
Chronic pain can affect every aspect of a child’s daily routine, including school, physical activities, friendships and emotional health. However, parents also experience significant responsibilities while managing appointments, treatments, emotional support and everyday family life. This research hopes to gain valuable insights into how these responsibilities influence parental stress levels, confidence in managing their child’s condition and overall wellbeing.
By gathering information directly from parents, researchers hope to improve future psychological support programmes, educational resources and healthcare services designed for families facing similar situations.
One of the best things about this study is that participation is straightforward and convenient. There is no need to travel to a hospital or research centre because everything is completed online.
Participants only need to complete one anonymous online survey, which takes approximately 20 to 25 minutes. Responses remain completely anonymous, allowing parents to answer honestly and comfortably without concerns about personal identification.
To ensure the research reflects both parental perspectives, the study requires that both parents participate independently, with each parent completing the survey separately. Each completed survey is treated as an individual participation, meaning both parents receive their own opportunity to be selected as one of the RM50 prize winners.
For parents who already have busy schedules caring for a child with chronic pain, an online survey provides flexibility. It can be completed from home at a suitable time without disrupting daily routines or requiring lengthy appointments.
Who can participate?
The research is currently looking for parents who meet the following requirements:
- Parent of a child aged between 6 and 16 years old.
- The child has experienced chronic pain lasting longer than three months.
- Both parents are able to participate by completing separate surveys independently.
- Participants are comfortable completing the survey in English.
If these requirements apply, participating could become a meaningful way to help researchers better understand the realities faced by many Malaysian families.
More than just a chance to win RM50
Although the opportunity to win RM50 is certainly attractive, the real value lies in contributing towards research that may improve healthcare support for future families.
Many parents often feel that their experiences are not fully understood. Research projects like this provide an opportunity for those experiences to become part of scientific evidence that can influence future services, counselling programmes and healthcare planning.
The findings may eventually assist psychologists, healthcare professionals and policymakers in creating better support systems specifically designed for parents caring for children with chronic pain.
Sometimes, simply sharing personal experiences through a confidential survey can make a lasting difference to future generations.
Why eligible parents should consider participating
There are several reasons why this research opportunity is worth considering.
Firstly, participation is completely online, making it convenient regardless of where participants are located in Malaysia.
Secondly, the survey requires only around 20 to 25 minutes, making it relatively quick compared to many research studies.
Thirdly, all responses remain anonymous, giving participants confidence that their privacy will be respected throughout the research process.
Another advantage is that every eligible parent who completes the survey receives an independent opportunity to become one of the 24 recipients of RM50. Since each parent is considered separately, households where both parents participate effectively receive two separate chances.
Most importantly, participants become part of research that could improve emotional support and healthcare resources for families dealing with chronic pain.
Every completed survey contributes valuable information that may help researchers understand the emotional, psychological and practical challenges parents face on a daily basis.

Research studies such as this rely on community participation to produce meaningful findings. Every response helps researchers build a clearer understanding of how families cope with chronic pain and what forms of support could make a genuine difference.
For eligible parents, this is an opportunity to spend less than half an hour contributing towards future improvements in healthcare while also enjoying the possibility of winning RM50. Whether the prize is won or not, taking part supports an important cause that could positively impact many Malaysian families for years to come.
