The long-awaited Malaysia 47th Bon Odori Dance Japanese Festival 2023 is back to Kompleks Sukan Negara Shah Alam. This event started out as a small affair for Japanese expatriates to immerse their children in Japanese culture in 1977.
Experience the Vibrant Bon Odori Festival at Shah Alam
Mark your calendars for the highly anticipated Bon Odori Festival, returning to Shah Alam National Sports Complex Panasonic on 22nd July 2023. This beloved Japanese festival, now in its 47th year, is a cultural extravaganza that brings together Malaysians of all backgrounds to celebrate Japanese traditions and foster diplomatic ties between Malaysia and Japan.
Originally launched in 1977 as a small gathering for Japanese expatriates and their families, the festival has since grown into a grand affair, attracting tens of thousands of locals and tourists each year. Organized collectively by The Japan Club of Kuala Lumpur, The Japanese School of Kuala Lumpur, and the Embassy of Japan, this year’s festival promises to be an unforgettable experience.
From 4.30pm onwards, attendees will immerse themselves in the lively atmosphere of the Bon Odori Festival. Picture a vibrant crowd, adorned in kimonos and yukatas, enjoying the sounds of Japanese pop-punk music filling the air. Indulge in a wide variety of Japanese street food, beverages, and souvenirs available at the numerous pop-up stalls, ensuring you’re fueled up for the main event.
At 7pm, gather around the main stage to witness the highlight of the festival: the Bon Odori dance. Performers dressed in traditional Japanese attire will take center stage on the illuminated wooden platform called yagura. Accompanied by the rhythmic beats of traditional Japanese drums, they will guide participants through the dance steps. Don’t worry if you’re not a dancer – everyone is welcome to join in the festivities, regardless of skill level.
Throughout the evening, enjoy performances by talented individuals from the Japanese School of Kuala Lumpur, providing intervals between the Bon Odori dances. Take advantage of the free shuttle service available from Shah Alam KTM station to the event venue, but be prepared for queues due to the expected high turnout.
The Bon Odori Festival at Shah Alam is a celebration of Japanese culture that promises an evening of merriment, cultural exchange, and culinary delights. Join Malaysians from all walks of life as they dance the dusk away and create lasting memories. Don’t miss out on this culturally spirited event.
It has now grown into a much-awaited annual event of about 35,000 participants each year.
FREE shuttle bus service (10 buses) between KTM Shah Alam Station and the stadium will be provided. However, the departure and arrival time of the buses are not synchronized with KTM train time schedule.
