Recently, we had the pleasure of interviewing Ms Tan, a volunteer teacher teaching English to kids from the refugee community in Subang Jaya. So for Teacher’s Day this year, we wanted to share their story to shine a little light on being a Teacher!
We wanted to find out more about how it is to be a ‘teacher’ when one has no formal experience teaching. Surely, it’s a daunting task, and a big undertaking too!
Here are some of the quotes from that interview.
Ms Tan started teaching Refugees 15 years ago, volunteering at a local refugee school in Subang. Helping out regularly, she helped build the school into what it is today.
According to her, one of their biggest achievements was that one of her students – a refugee who was once working in a local kopitiam – has since been relocated to the USA and won a scholarship to a top university there. All due to her team’s efforts to provide the student with the right education.
Among all the anecdotes that she gave, Ms Tan’s main point was always this:
You do not need to be a ‘certified’ teacher to be a teacher.
You do not need to be a ‘certified’ teacher to be a good influence.
You do not need to be a ‘certified’ teacher to change someone’s life for the better.
So rise up teachers – ALL teachers, certified or not. YOU make an impact to our communities, and you are changing the world. Thank you for your efforts and for your love and care
