No Black Tie Malaysia is having their WVC completed. Formed in 2006 as a trio, WVC completed its quartet lineup with the addition of saxophonist Julian Chan.
Through regional tours, WVC has managed to travel extensively over 18 cities and performed 23 concerts within in a month. They have five instrumental albums and also experiment with transforming unlikely pop tunes, Chinese classics and mainstream music into new jazz re-arrangements. WVC has appeared in many festivals in the region such as the Kota Kinabalu Jazz Festival, U CSI International Jazz Festival, KL Arts Fest, Macau International Jazz Week, Phuket International Jazz Festival and more.
Born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, since young Fung Chern Hwei was exposed to a diverse array of music, from Chinese Pop and Malay Dance music, to Indian Bollywood tunes and Western Classical music. He took violin at the age of 4, and after starting lessons, he found himself imitating electric guitar and saxophone sounds on his violin. Upon finishing graduate school in New York, Chern Hwei chose to stay on as a freelance music, playing various genres of music, absorbing more musical languages and means of expression. He is known to play a mix of western classical, jazz, middle-eastern belly dance, hip-hop and historically-informed baroque.
